This past fall, the Board of Directors from the OGCSA and WWGCSA got together for a joint meeting. The purpose was to plan an event that would allow members from both associations to utilize their skills for a worthy cause, as well as network with their peers. We are happy to announce that on Thursday, March 14, Superintendents and industry partners from Oregon and Washington will be joining forces to complete a service project at American Lake Veterans Golf Course.
The golf course is located on the grounds of the VA Hospital in Lakewood, Washington. In 1995, the US government withdrew all funding for the operation and maintenance of all VA golf courses. Due to an agreement made with the VA Puget Sound Health Care, this course is now completely run by volunteers who are primarily veterans themselves. It’s an amazing story and we encourage you to read more about it on their website at www.veterangolf.org. A group of our board members were able to meet with the Assistant Superintendent (volunteer) in January and get a plan together of work that needs to be done. It’s a long list, and the amount we are able to get done is dependent on how many volunteers we have. The volunteers that care for American Lake take a lot of pride in their course. They are blown away that a bunch of golf course superintendents want to come and help them, and are excited to learn all they can……..that’s a good enough reason for us!
This event is made possible due to generous contributions and the selflessness of our association members. To signup to volunteer Click here . For those that are not able to volunteer their time, we are also accepting donations to support this cause. Contact Alexis Wenker at 503-344-6535 or ogcsa@ogcsa.org for more information on donations. Breakfast and Lunch will be provided, and any unused funds will be donated back to the course to use as they need. Both associations are extremely excited about this inaugural event and hope to make it an annual occurrence which will bounce back and forth between locations in Oregon and Washington each year. We look forward to seeing you there.
